Tookie Shares the Love

One of the things I love most about being a photographer is all the amazing people I’ve met – clients, other wedding vendors and other photographers. It’s such a blessing to have friends who are passionate about the same thing I am to share this crazy, amazing, awe-inspiring and beautiful journey with. And as a huge perk, sometimes these friends take photos of your child, your family, and you.

Tookie came along to a photographer fundraiser I participated in and a couple of the other photogs took some cool shots of him being his silly, unbelievably adorable self. Here’s a few of my favorites that my friend Kelley of Marie Kelley Photography took.

Oh and psst, I am getting over my fear of looking huge and fat and having maternity photos taken this weekend! So the belly will be making a blog appearance.

Beautiful Haiti

Last month my family and I sailed on the inaugural cruise of Royal Caribbean’s brand new ship, the Oasis of the Seas. One of the places we visited was Labadee, Royal Caribbean’s private beach on Haiti’s north coast. The private beach is completely sheltered from the rest of the country and is guarded by UN troops. That made me incredibly sad. The small glimpse we got of Haiti was absolutely beautiful, but it was so heartbreaking that the situation in Haiti was so bad that they had to completely isolate the tourists visiting by UN troops. I wanted to badly to be able to see more of Haiti, the part that wasn’t sheltered for tourism. This was before the earthquake.

Watching the aftermath of the earthquake on the news was so difficult and I couldn’t help but think of the Haitians that we met during that small glimpse we got. Were they ok? Did they know where their family were? I felt so helpless watching the coverage on TV. I really wanted to help in some meaningful way. Well, I am incredibly blessed to be a member of a local photography group called SoFly. It’s a small group of hugely talented women that are photographers in South Florida. We meet once a month to shoot and chat about life and business. Our last meetup was right after the earthquake in Haiti so we decided to organize a fundraiser for Haiti Earthquake Relief. We will be shooting mini sessions this Saturday, January 30 in downtown Hollywood and all proceeds will go to a local charity called Sow A Seed that is doing relief work in Haiti. If you are in the South Florida area, please come out! You’ll get amazing photos and help Haiti at the same time. It’s truly a win-win. Details below!

A couple of resolutions for 2010 are to blog more, blog more personal stuff and to take more photos of my funny kiddo. If you have (or have had) a three year old, you know they can come up with some funny and totally cute stuff. Here’s a few from this week:

* Santa Claus is mad at you mommy (in response to me putting away the Christmas tree).

* The puppy in my tummy is getting bigger and I need to go to the doctor.

* Can I put on my popcorn underwear?

* Mommy, Jess is beautiful.

Christmas in black and white . . . well, almost

Tookie is three now and this year he really got into Christmas. We had to watch every Christmas movie on TV, we baked cookies, we wrapped presents, we trimmed the tree. And most importantly we wish Jesus a Happy Birthday. Next year we have to work on leaving the ornaments on the tree. By the time the big day got here, the bottom branches of the tree were looking pretty barren.

But watching him open presents on Christmas Day and then thanking Jesus was such a special moment. Definitely one I’m tucking away to pull out and remember when he’s being naughty. Hope all of you enjoyed a special time with your family and loved ones and that 2010 brings magic, laughter and love.

Baking Christmas Cookies

Last weekend Tookie and I spent a couple of hours baking Czech Christmas cookies. You may not know, but I was born in the Czech Republic and these cookies are some of the ones my mom made when I was little. She still makes them and even sent us some that she made this year. I guess they were supposed to be for Tookie but Rich and I ate some too Mine didn’t turn out nearly as good as my moms (is that even possible?) and of course she makes a lot more varieties, but Tookie and I had fun making a big mess in the kitchen.

I don’t do a lot of food photography but I was inspired by one of my favorite blogs to document our baking adventure in photos. If you’ve never seen the Sprouted Kitchen blog, you are missing out. The recipes sound so good it makes you want to eat healthy for every meal and the photography is absolutely beautiful.

I am thankful

This year I am thankful for so many things, it’s difficult to put them all into words. I am thankful for a God that gives me grace and hope even during my most trying times. I know He loves me even when I act selfish and unkind and that gives me so much strength and peace.

I am thankful for my husband and his unconditional support and love. He is truly my best friend and I could not ask for a better father to my son (soon to be sons! eek). His unconditional support is such a huge reason why I am able to do what I do. I love watching him interact with our son. They have so much fun together and all that love makes me feel so gooey inside.

I am thankful for Tookie. I cannot imagine how the world functioned without him in it. He gives me so much light and joy. Hearing him laugh is the absolute best sound in the world and I feel so special to be his mommy. He is truly a blessing and I am so proud of my little boy.

I am thankful to be blessed with another baby boy. Tookie will be such an awesome brother and I love that I will be surrounded by boys.

I am thankful for my family, who have always supported me. Baba and Gdo (he he, don’t you love the names kids come up with) and Papa, my sister and her husband, who are going to make me an aunt soon and everyone else in this crazy family of ours. I love you all!

I am thankful for all of you who are reading this. My past, current and future clients who allow me the honor to document your love, your special moments, those you are thankful for. I love you all and I hope you’re having the best day with your loved ones.

SoFly Photo-a-Day: The Preggo Diaries

As most of you probably know, I’m about 14 weeks pregnant with our second baby. And I have to admit, I am definitely not one of those women that gushes about how much I love being pregnant. Don’t get me wrong, I love the end result (the beginning ain’t half bad either ), but the process of being pregnant is not as fun as you might think.

I had yet another appointment at the doctor today and as always you start by peeing in a cup. What is with these doctors and their obsessive need to collect urine samples? Anyhoo, as I’m sitting there with the water running, hoping I can pee on command, I look up and see the poster below. Now I love my doctor, but seriously, this chick looks like a genetic freak! Her arms are the size of toothpicks, her boobs haven’t grown to look like oversized watermelon and her butt still looks to be normal sized. What planet was this “artist” living on? Best part is, I got to see this so-called medical diagram right after I got weighed by a nurse that might way less than my 3 year old. Oh the indignity of it all! Give me a pregnant Roseann Barr and call it a day will ya?
